Brush fire burns 2,000 acres
PIONEERTOWN – A fire that may have been started by a campfire burned 2,000 acres of brush in rough terrain Tuesday before firefighters controlled it, said a California Department of Forestry captain.
There were no injuries and no structures were ever threatened, said Capt. Ken Menell.
The blaze reported to CDF at 4:17 p.m. about four miles west of here, was temporarily spurred by high afternoon winds that died down Tuesday night, Merell said.
The rocky terrain made the area inaccessible to fire engines and hampered firefighting efforts, the captain said. One CDF handcrew battled the blaze.
Although the cause still is being investigated, he said there were reports of a campfire in the area where the fire began.
The fire was controlled about 8:30 p.m.
