Volunteers to Rebuild
Old Mountain Road
JOSHUA TREE, Jan. 31 –
Improvement of a short-cut road linking San Bernardino Mountain resorts with high desert towns is being sparked by an energetic group of citizens in the area west of Twentynine Palms.
Pioneertown and Yucca Valley are the focal points in this effort which is called Pioneer Pass Push.
Pioneer Pass is a passable highway, save for a three mile stretch just below the famous old Rose Mine. The road was named as a result of a contest seeking a suitable name for this historic old cattle route from winter desert forage to summer mountain meadow feeding land.
Improvement of the short stretch of road is to be undertaken as a vast volunteer labor drive. Work will be by pick and shovel brigade, plus contributed heavy equipment, to get the job done with concentrated effort on April 18 and 19.
To gain necessary assistance and to publicize the Push, a button sales campaign has been organized. Buttons will bear different designations, such as V.I.P., Pushers and Peons.
Lending backing to the drive for a road are Magda Lawson, San Bernardino supervisor, and Inspector Kendell Stone of the sheriff’s department. Stone is a member of an early family which owned ranch land in the San Bernardino Mountains and used the road beginning in 1875 for cattle drives.
