Board delays action on Pioneertown water

SAN BERNARDINO – County supervisors Monday delayed action on Pioneertown’s water project after a group of residents expressed concern that the improved water service could spur development that would destroy the community’s Old West character.

The county board, scheduling a decision for 10 a.m. July 11, asked for staff meetings with residents in the meantime to resolve the concern.

Constance Walsh-Hanson, a spokeswoman for the residents, said they do not oppose growth but are concerned over “how it’s going to happen.” Merry Ubelacker said they want to protect Pioneertown’s historical features.

The $554,000 project would require property assessments ranging from $580 to $1,629 per 1.25 acres to pay off a 34-yar loan by the state Department of Water Resources that would finance a replacement of the deteriorated water system.
