Pioneer Pass Road. Will Link Big Bear, Desert

BIG BEAR LAKE, April 29-Passenger cars soon can use the Pioneer pass Rd. between Big Bear resorts and the high desert communities of Yucca, Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms to the east, according to Earl Nichols, district ranger of the Big Bear headquarters for the U.S. Forrest Service.

L.A. Horsemen Start 350-Mile Trail Ride

Clip-clop of horses' hooves brought back the old days at 1st and Spring Sts. yesterday. The occasion was the start of a horseback ride from Los Angeles to Pioneertown near Yucca Valley, a distance of some 350 miles by Equestrian Trails, Inc., a horsemen's nonprofit organization.

A prime factor in the growth potential of the high desert is the unparalleled weather. The Golden Empire is situated 4000 feet above sea level, and the cool breezes that flow off the San Bernadino Mountains in the background also protect it from excessive high temperatures. The California Golden Empire enjoys a year round average temperature of a pleasantly mild 70 degrees.

Pioneer Loop Association Set

With 62 persons voting, representing more than a dozen communities from two counties, the Pioneer Loop Association, dedicated to tourism and recreation, was given a solid โ€œyesโ€ vote at its formation meeting Feb. 17 at the Glen Restaurant. Jim Ishmael, Resident of the Hi-Desert Associated Chambers of Commerce and host for the meeting, presided.

The third fire in a week in tiny Pioneertown in Yucca Valley burned actor Jack Bailey's Golden Stallion restaurant to the ground after an employee fell asleep smoking, causing more than $50,000 damage, officials reported. Friday a $45,000 fire destroyed the Red Dog Saloon a block of the street, and a third fire last Monday caused $3,500 damage. Officials said the fires were apparently unrelated.

One that sticks in a 20-foot circle perched on a parched hillside is rewarded by Hayden with a bottle of champagne. An errant hook, however, may end up in the saloon of Hayden's western-style movie set.
