A ghost town haunted by people

WE ENTERED the central compound of Pioneertown with caution, expecting a fight to tumble through the saloon doors any minute, or the "fastest gun in the West" to make a fast draw. It was soon evident, though, that our fears were unfounded—this town is only a fascinating echo of the West's wild past.

A prime factor in the growth potential of the high desert is the unparalleled weather. The Golden Empire is situated 4000 feet above sea level, and the cool breezes that flow off the San Bernadino Mountains in the background also protect it from excessive high temperatures. The California Golden Empire enjoys a year round average temperature of a pleasantly mild 70 degrees.

Pioneer Loop Association Set

With 62 persons voting, representing more than a dozen communities from two counties, the Pioneer Loop Association, dedicated to tourism and recreation, was given a solid “yes” vote at its formation meeting Feb. 17 at the Glen Restaurant. Jim Ishmael, Resident of the Hi-Desert Associated Chambers of Commerce and host for the meeting, presided.
